Are Sports and Camp Physicals Available in 2021?

2020 was a bizarre year to say the least. Every aspect of our daily routines was interrupted during the pandemic. In 2021, vaccine rollouts have helped lower the number of COVID-19 cases and slow the spread of the virus. That means things can start going back to normal! Masks, COVID-19 tests, and vaccines aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, but at least your child can get back into their favorite sports and summer activities. Many sports teams and summer camps require a physical before your child can be enrolled. That leaves parents wondering, are those physicals even available in 2021?

Sports and Camp Physicals in 2021

Sports and camp physicals are a helpful tool that will assess your child’s current health status to determine if they’re healthy enough to participate in sports or summer camp activities. Sports and camp physicals are available in 2021! 2020 slowed down non-essential medical treatments, but things are a lot less restricted at this point in the pandemic. Some medical facilities may ask that you and your child wear a mask during the appointment or provide a temperature screening at the door.

Finding a Location for Your Child’s Physical

The easiest place to take your child for a sports or camp physical is a nearby urgent care center. Urgent care centers don’t require an appointment and operate on a first come first serve basis. That means you can bring your child in whenever it fits into your schedule, even if it’s short notice! Urgent care centers are also a great resource for people who need to get a physical without spending too much money.

Your health insurance may cover the cost of a sports physical, but if not, an urgent care is the cheapest place to pay for the exam out of pocket. Urgent care centers are located all around the country. Chances are, there’s one not too far from your normal daily route to work or school!

What to Expect

During a physical, the doctor will do a general exam on your child. This includes checking height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and lung sounds. They will review your child’s medical history and assess any other areas as needed. You can use this appointment as an opportunity to ask any questions you have about keeping your child safe during their summertime activities.

If your child is experiencing seasonal allergies, asthma, or another chronic condition, you can start discussing potential treatment options. After the appointment, you’ll have documentation from a medical professional stating whether or not your child is healthy enough to partake in their summer plans. You can share that documentation with their coaches, camp leaders, and anyone else who needs to know.
