How Can I Avoid Diabetes?

Diabetes is a common disease worldwide. In fact, just over one in 10 Americans were affected by the disease in 2020.

Even though diabetes is common, there are things you can do to help lower your risk. Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care Castle Rock explains.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the body does not properly process food for use as energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose for our bodies to use for energy, and insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps the glucose get into the cells of our bodies.

When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make insulin or can’t use its own insulin the way that it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood, which can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness and kidney failure.

More Negative Effects of Diabetes

  • Increased stroke risk
  • Can cause cataracts and glaucoma
  • Leads to chronically high blood sugar levels
  • Nerve damage
  • Skin problems

How Can I Make Sure that I Don’t Get It?

There’s not one foolproof way to avoid diabetes as family history is often an important risk factor of the disease; however, there are lifestyle choices that you can make to lower your risk.

Other important risk factors include living a sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet, so avoiding those things is a good place to start. Aim for 150 minutes of exercise every week to lower your diabetes risk in addition to the other suggestions that we’ve listed below.

More Ways to Lower Risk of Diabetes

  • Eat a high-fiber diet.
  • Lose weight if you’re overweight or obese.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Quit or refrain from smoking.

The daily choices that you make have a big impact on your overall health, so do your best to stay healthy this winter. If you do end up feeling under the weather or have any other questions, don’t hesitate to visit our AFC Urgent Care Castle Rock team today!
